Scientists put camera in mouse’s brain

Submitted by Brandon on Friday, 1 February 2008One Comment

I’m not sure what to call this, the Canon 1D Mark III Rat IS? Japanese scientists have implanted a small camera inside the mouse’s brain so they can research how memory is formed. (Photo by Braydawg)The little camera would make point-and-shoots feel like they need to go to weight watchers. The thing in 2.3 mm wide, 3 mm long and 2.3 mm in depth. You can read the original story from Rueters here

Working with researchers at Kinki University, Ohta implanted the special semiconductor camera inside the hippocampus of the mouse’s brain, designing the devise so that a screen showed blue light whenever the camera captured memory being recorded by the brain.

The researchers injected the mouse with a substance that lights up whenever there is brain activity. The camera then captures that light and the visuals come up on a screen.

I’m just wondering what would happen if they did this to a human. What if they could take pictures of what a human was thinking? That would be slightly awkward. Talk about a little too much information…

But all joking aside, the aim for this camera is to hopefully lead to new ways to treat Parkinson’s disease. Hopefully the camera will be able to tell what kind of brain activity triggers tremors and such.
