Sigma announces DP1
It’s a point-and-shoot camera with a high mega-pixel count, but it might cost you…
Sigma has announced the much-anticipated DP1, which uses the same Foveon X3 sensor as their SD14 SLR, which means that camera will be packing 14 megapixels. The next biggest point-and-shoot is Canon’s Powershot G9, which has a 12 mega-pixel resolution.
The cost is $999, which is quite a bit of money for a point-and-shoot, but the camera will be able to turn in some very nice images with that big sensor.
“In comparison, compact cameras almost invariably have sensors that are much smaller and cheaper, but that are at least theoretically responsive for a given megapixel count.
The camera uses a 16.6mm f/4 fixed-focal-length lens, equivalent to 28mm in 35mm film camera terms. It produces raw image files for those who want the higher quality possible from using the unprocessed sensor data.”
