Looking for a smaller alternative to a digital SLR?

Digital Life gave the Canon Powershot G9 a four out of five rating to the 12 megapixel camera.

The main gripe here is the amount of noise that creeps in at high ISO settings or low light. Fair enough, the image stabilisation feature gives you a little more latitude when hand-holding in dim conditions. Nevertheless, the amount of grain is a problem.

It’s a shortcoming common to nearly all cameras of this class and is due to the fact the sensor on which the image is captured is so tiny.

But if low-light shooting is not an issue or you are content to use an external flash or tripod, it’s hard to imagine a better camera to have in your pocket when you’re travelling light.
