Nikon looking to increase sales of high-end SLRs
Nikon is looking to expand the productivity of its professional SLR sales.
Here’s the news from JCN Network:
Tokyo, May 29, 2008 (Jiji Press) - Nikon Corp. <7731> President Michio Kariya has shown the company’s intention to boost sales of its high-end digital single-lens reflex cameras, whose profit margins are higher than those for other cameras.
“This year, we will shift the focus of our strategy to strengthening brand power,” Kariya said in a recent interview with Jiji Press.
Kariya indicated that he does not mind if his company is replaced by rival Canon Inc. <7751> as the top digital SLR camera seller in Japan this year in terms of volume. According to Kariya, Nikon places more emphasis on profitability than on a market share.
The Japanese digital SLR camera market is dominated by Nikon and Canon. Nikon was the market leader last year.
For its current business year, which began in April, Nikon puts its global SLR camera shipments at 3.3 million units, up 210,000 units from the previous year.
The projection is conservative compared with that of Canon, which foresees global shipments of 4.4 million units for calendar 2008, up one million units from 2007.
Nikon appears to be concerned that expanding sales by focusing on low-priced products will accelerate price wars and lead to low profitability as a result.
Are you ready for a new round of Camera wars? With Nikon making considerable inrows on the SLR market against Canon, this should just further the rivalry between the two companies.
Now the D3 was very well received in the photography community and won quite a few camera awards. It will be interesting to see how they follow up that camera body.
