J.D. Power ranks best digital cameras of 2008

J.D. Power and Associates has released their 2008 Digital Camera Usage Satisfaction Study, which examines picture quality, performance, ease of operation, and appearance and styling. The report gave healthy props to DSLRS by Canon and Nikon, and point-and-shoots by Canon, Fujifilm, Lumix (Panasonic) and Sony.

In the point and shoot category, Fujifilm’s Finepix S series came out on top, while in the premium point and shoot category, Canon and Lumix tied for top honors. Canon also scored a tie with Nikon for the top DSLR slot.

There’s also an “ultra slim” category in which the Sony Cybershot T series led the charge, followed by the Casio Exilim Zoom series and the Fujifilm FinePix Z series.

As part of the customer satisfaction survey, J.D. Power gathered data on what users most wanted to see next in digital cameras, and the answers overwhelmingly centered on one theme: Better weatherproofing.

That makes perfect sense–if you live in someplace like Seattle, have kids or like to leave paved areas, better weatherproofing can start to feel like a prerequisite for something you dropped a good chunk of change for.
