Question: Does an oversized light tent matter in product photography?

Question: Does an oversized light tent matter in product photography?

One shooter wonders whether he’ll need multiple light tents for different sized products.

Jeff in California asks:

I’m thinking of buying a light tent for product photography. But I may have different size products…Can I get away with getting the largest light tent I’ll need and using it for everything, or do I need to use tents that more closely match the size of each product?

Hi Jeff-

Thanks for your question.

As you probably know, the ultimate effect you end up with when using a light tent is that peaceful, almost glowing white background that can make the object look like it’s floating somewhere in commercial product land along with iPods, Infiniti cars and high-end shampoos.

Thankfully for you, you can get away with buying the largest light tent you’ll need. If you’re using a larger tent for a smaller product you may be left with a little bit extra of that magic space, but all you’ll have to do is crop in.

Happy shooting—send us a few sample shots if you’re up to it!
