Firmware update adds digital zoom to Casio Exilim EX-Z150

Casio released today a firmware update that adds a digital zoom feature to the company’s 8.1 megapixel Exilim EX-Z150, a camera which already had 4x optical zoom. The upgrade enhances that factor to 60.2x.

The camera, which has a unique “YouTube Capture Mode,” was announced July 14 and just hit the market last month, which could leave one wondering: Did Casio mean to add digital zoom in the first place? Could this be a case of corporate oversight?

Whatever the case may be, if you own an Exilim EX-Z150, be thankful.

Visit Casio’s site here to download the firmware upgrade, and click here for a one-page PDF explaining how the digital zoom feature works.

Rest assured it’s pretty simple. Zoom in, and after you hit the optical zoom’s limit, it goes digital. At that point, Casio warns that “the higher the digital zoom factor, the coarser the recorded image.”

In case anyone’s wondering, that’s how it works with with any camera’s digital zoom feature; digital zoom has essentially the same effect as cropping the image.

If you snag any good shots with your Exilim, share them with us!
