Ritz Camera offers special “Black Gold” special edition Nikon D60

This one’s rich: Nikon has released a “Black Gold” edition of the 10.2 megapixel prosumer D60. What differentiates it from the normal D60? Some shiny gold paint. At Ritz Camera, that bling will run you an additional $30 (while it’s on sale). We haven’t seen one of these beasts up close, but we can tell you that upon seeing Web photos of them, a few questions come to mind. One is, “Why on earth would Nikon do this?” Another is, “Who on earth would buy this?” A third is, “Does this camera belong on earth?”

Too early to answer any of those definitively, but we sure can speculate:

A.) Nikon did this because the company hoped it would make them some money.

B.) People who think the shiny gold buttons will make other people think they’re cool are likely to be among the target demographic for potential buyers.

C.) No, this camera probably does not belong on earth. The D60 was already a fantastic, compact prosumer DSLR before, and the gold paint doesn’t appear make it any better.

At Gizmodo.com, they said the camera looks “so ugly it’d make Mr. T cry, if he could cry.”

All that having been said, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and if you think these puppies look sweet, click here to head over to Ritz Camera and pick one up.

The kit comes with 18-55mm VR and 55-200mm VR lenses and goes for $879.99 this week.
