Florida’s Tim Hussin named College Photographer of the Year
University of Florida student Tim Hussin, of Palm Harbor, Fla., was named this week the winner of the College Photographer of the Year Portfolio competition, both surprising him and landing him a coveted internship at National Geographic.
“Well, as I guess like anybody would be, I was pretty excited,” Hussin said. “It was pretty unexpected. The competition was pretty steep.”
Hussin, 23, said he’ll graduate from the University of Florida in December with a degree in Journalism. Immediately thereafter he’ll begin a stint doing multi-media work for the Washington Post, an opportunity he said he earned by winning an award at this year’s Eddie Adams workshop.
Hussin hopes to engineer things so that the National Geographic internship, which is also in Washington, D.C., comes on the tail end of his time at the Washington Post.
Hussin has already interned with numerous newspapers including the Monroe Evening News, the Deseret News, the Gainesville Sun and, most recently, the Rocky Mountain News.
He said he first developed an interest in photography as a child and would frequently take photos during family vacations.
His first SLR was a 35mm film camera he received after his grandfather passed away, he said. Hussin said he had originally planned to study environmental sciences at the University of Florida, but found himself much more captivated by photography.
Hussin said he hopes to focus his career on documentary photography.
“That’s kind of what moves me the most–the documentary style, and multimedia pieces,” Hussin said.
The College Photographer of the Year competition was first founded in 1945 and is run by the University of Missouri and partially funded by Nikon, Inc.
