Canon to respond to reports of black dots in 5D-Mark II images

Canon to respond to reports of black dots in 5D-Mark II images

Everybody’s calming down after the huge fanfare surrounding Canon’s 21.1-megapixel 5D-Mark II, and some users are starting to look beyond the crisp, color-rich images and notice occasional tiny black specks in some of their photos, prompting Canon to announce that it will address the problem.

According to numerous early Web reports posted by some of the first owners of the $2,700 camera, the small black dots occur just to the right of some bright spots, particularly at high ISO settings–though some people claim to have seen them as low as ISO 100.

Either way, the dots evidently aren’t visible until zoomed in beyond 100 percent, and initial reviews regarding image quality still remain strong.

Still, Canon Technical Advisor Chuck Westfall told readers of his Digital Journalist blog to, “Watch for an official Canon comment on this issue in the very near future.”

A series of photos taken by nature photographer Andrew Yip illustrates the problem. Click on the screen capture below to see his images.
