I'll be shooting portraits in 3 week, is there a way to connect my Canon XTi to my laptop for real time viewing? Thanks.

There certainly is i believe.  Check out Apple.com/support and then choose software on the left panel and then aperture and then discussions.  Search tethering in the user discussions.  People are posting tethering with the XTi.  Aperture might have some native tethering capability and a 15 day trial.  If Canon utility is available for your camera you can shoot to a folder and use Bridge to view the images.
